QGIS Advanced

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become essential tools for understanding and managing the world around us. From disaster response and city planning to environmental monitoring and commercial site analysis, GIS helps professionals visualize and interpret spatial relationships with clarity and precision. By combining cartography, statistics, and databases, GIS supports smarter decision-making across industries.

As spatial data becomes more central to strategy and operations, the demand for advanced GIS skills continues to grow. QGIS—a leading open-source GIS platform—makes powerful tools accessible to everyone without licensing costs. For those already comfortable with the basics, the next step is mastering spatial databases, automating data workflows, and performing detailed analysis using both vector and raster data.

At Geo-ICT, we created the Advanced QGIS Course to help professionals meet these demands. By combining practical exercises with real-world scenarios, this course prepares you to tackle complex spatial challenges and turn geographic data into actionable insight.

What you will learn

The course begins with a deep dive into GIS data formats and storage systems. You’ll explore geopackages and set up PostgreSQL/PostGIS connections, learning how to manage large spatial datasets and perform direct database queries within QGIS. These tools provide a scalable way to structure and analyze complex projects.

From there, the focus shifts to project organization and visual presentation. You’ll refine your use of project templates, metadata settings, and coordinate systems while learning how to apply default styles consistently. QGIS expressions are introduced for tasks like advanced labeling, field calculations, and print layout customization, giving your maps both function and polish.

Next, you’ll explore analytical and editing techniques in depth. Guided exercises will take you through advanced vector analysis, graphical model building, and raster data processing. You’ll practice using tools for snapping, tracing, and geometry validation, while also customizing attribute forms and building layout-ready maps with themes, overviews, and atlases.

Throughout the course, you’ll be encouraged to bring your own data or case studies, ensuring the training is not only technically valuable but also directly applicable to your work.

Why choose this course

Geo-ICT’s Advanced QGIS Course is designed to help professionals go beyond the basics and apply GIS in more complex, real-world contexts. Here’s what makes it stand out:

  • Taught by experienced instructors with deep practical knowledge of spatial analysis

    Course structure

    Day 1

The course begins with a review of key GIS data types, including the structure and use of geopackages and spatial databases like PostgreSQL/PostGIS. You’ll explore advanced project settings—such as home folders, metadata, and styling defaults—and learn how to apply them using reusable templates. The day also introduces QGIS expressions, which allow for dynamic labeling, rule-based styling, and smart print layouts.

    Day 2

The second day focuses on spatial analysis and data editing. You’ll revisit vector analysis, then move into raster data processing and graphical model building. Practical sessions will cover advanced digitizing techniques such as snapping, avoiding overlaps, and tracing existing features. You’ll also work with customized attribute forms, geometry validation tools, and map presentation features like themes and atlases. Time is set aside to explore your own GIS data or case studies with instructor feedback.
