QGIS Models and GIS

QGIS Models let you streamline your GIS work by combining multiple analysis steps into one automated workflow. Instead of repeating the same processes over and over, you can build a model that runs everything—from data preparation to analysis—with a single click. This is especially useful when working with complex spatial questions that involve filtering, calculations, or layered operations.

Understanding the basics of GIS is important, but being able to automate your workflows takes your skills to the next level. In QGIS, models are built using a visual interface where you link tools together into a sequence. These can include both raster and vector operations, making them ideal for tasks like risk mapping, environmental monitoring, or infrastructure planning.

This course is all about helping you build and apply these models. Whether you’re managing geodata in urban planning, ecology, logistics, or any other field, QGIS Models will help you save time, reduce errors, and work more efficiently.

What will you learn

In this course, you will learn how to design and implement QGIS Models to automate your GIS workflows. Starting with a brief review of QGIS’s analytical structure, you’ll learn how to break down a GIS process into individual steps and then combine those steps into a repeatable, automated model. You will become familiar with the QGIS Model Builder interface, understanding where to find the tools you need and how to use them in sequence to achieve your desired analysis.

As you progress, you will begin constructing your own models to perform advanced spatial analyses. These workflows will allow you to integrate various datasets, apply a series of spatial operations, and output visualizations or insights that would otherwise take significant manual effort. You will also explore how QGIS Models are used across different disciplines—from environmental assessments to urban development and logistics—giving you the versatility to apply your new skills in many contexts.

Along the way, you’ll gain insights into the broader importance of GIS automation and how it helps professionals work more efficiently, make fewer errors, and generate reliable, data-driven outcomes. By the end of the course, you’ll not only understand how to build and apply models but also how to use them as a foundation for more complex spatial analysis.

    Course structure

We begin with a short introduction to how spatial analyses in QGIS are typically structured and how combining those steps into a single model boosts efficiency. You’ll be guided through the QGIS Model Builder interface and learn how to locate and use its key functions. Then it’s time to build: starting with a basic model and working your way up to more advanced workflows. Throughout the course, you’ll work on guided exercises and apply your knowledge to real-life examples. By the end of the day, you’ll be able to create, run, and manage your own QGIS Models with confidence and independence.
