What a Data Steward Does

As a data steward, you have a solid education at the associate’s or bachelor’s degree level. At the Geo-ICT Training Center in the Netherlands, you can take various specialized courses that are essential for your role. These include the Data Analysis and GIS Course, Python and Data Science, R Programming, MATLAB, and Advanced SQL. These courses ensure that you not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also become highly skilled in handling complex datasets and advanced analytical methods.

 

At the Geo-ICT Training Center, you’re not just trained; you also get the chance to be seconded. This allows you to put your skills into practice with various clients such as municipalities, federal agencies, the Land Registry, engineering firms, water boards, provinces, and contractors. As a data steward, you play a crucial role in managing and protecting the data within your organization. This includes a number of essential tasks that you perform on a daily basis:

  • Monitoring data quality: It is your responsibility to ensure that all data within the organization is accurate, consistent, and up-to-date. This is crucial for the reliability of business processes.
  • Maintaining data security: You ensure that all data is stored securely and protected against unauthorized access. Additionally, you ensure that your organization complies with all legal requirements regarding data protection.
  • Data classification and tagging: One of your tasks is to correctly classify and tag data. This helps organize the data, making it easier to find and use for various departments within the organization.
  • Data documentation: You are also responsible for maintaining detailed documentation about the datasets. This includes information about the origin of the data, its meaning, and any changes or transformations the data has undergone.

  3. Ontwikkelen of aanpassen van processen voor datakwaliteit, metadata of data-documentatie.

  5. Begeleiden van analyses of dashboards waarmee data wordt aangeboden aan besluitvormers.

Hoewel je als datasteward sterke algemene data-vaardigheden nodig hebt, maakt kennis van geo-informatie (zoals GIS-systemen, geo-databases, locatieanalyse) je rol bij Geo-ICT effectiever. Het helpt om geo-data kwalitatief goed te beheren en te verbinden met bredere thema’s zoals mobiliteit of infrastructuur.

In deze rol gelden normen op het gebied van datakwaliteit (nauwkeurigheid, consistentie, volledigheid), metadata en beheer, alsook normen op het gebied van dataveiligheid, privacy (zoals AVG) en data-governance. Het is essentieel dat processen gedocumenteerd zijn en dat de data betrouwbaar is voor gebruikers.
