Electric grids, gas and district heating networks, solar and wind energy, energy storage, and other energy infrastructure must be planned, constructed, managed, and expanded. Geo-ICT helps provide insight into these energy systems and their relationship with the surrounding environment. In this course, you’ll learn how the energy system is structured and how geoinformation is used to manage, analyze, and plan energy infrastructure, energy generation, and energy demand. This will lay a broad foundation for further specialization within the field of Energy.

Introduction to GIS and the Energy Sector

Would you like to better understand how energy infrastructure is structured, learn how networks are mapped, and discover how GIS helps visualize and manage these complex systems? In this course, you’ll learn about the role of GIS in the energy sector and discover how gas and electricity grids are mapped using modern mapping and data systems.

GIS plays a central role in mapping, recording, and analyzing underground and aboveground assets. From pipelines and cables to stations and valves: everything is geographically recorded to enable safe, reliable, and efficient management. Many energy companies use Smallworld GIS for this purposeβ€”a powerful system in which network data is built, accessed, and updated.

In this course, you’ll learn step by step how gas and electricity networks are structured and how to query, analyze, and visualize these networks using GIS. You’ll also receive a concise introduction to Smallworld GIS, so you’ll understand how the system is used in the day-to-day practice of asset management.

Day 1

  • During this one-day course, you’ll receive a clear and practical introduction to both the energy sector and the use of GIS. We’ll start with the basics of the gas and electricity grids: how these infrastructures are structured, what components they consist of, and how everything is interconnected. Then you’ll get hands-on with GIS and learn how to open, view, and visualize network data.
  • You’ll practice locating pipes, cables, and components on the map and learn how to interpret feature information. You’ll also receive a concise introduction to Smallworld GIS, the platform many energy companies use to manage their network data. Through short hands-on assignments, you’ll immediately apply the theory and gain a clear understanding of how GIS is used on a daily basis within the energy sector.
