FME Form Advanced

FME Desktop Advanced

FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) is one of the most powerful tools available for data transformation and integration, especially when working with geospatial information. Developed by Safe Software, FME lets you connect, convert, and automate data across more than 400 formats—all without needing to write code. It’s the go-to solution for professionals who need to clean, combine, and manage complex datasets with precision and ease.

What makes FME unique is its visual, no-code interface. Instead of writing scripts, you can drag and drop components to build workflows that handle everything from map layer conversions to quality checks. This opens up advanced data work to users of all backgrounds—not just developers.

Beyond its ease of use, FME is incredibly flexible. It supports batch processing, real-time data streams, and event-based automation. Whether you’re working in urban planning, environmental management, logistics, or IT, FME helps you streamline your processes, reduce errors, and save time. This course is designed to help you unlock that potential—so you can go from understanding the basics to solving advanced data challenges with confidence.

Some experience with FME Desktop is required—if you’re new to it, we recommend starting with our FME Form Basics course.

What will you learn

In the FME Desktop Advanced course, you’ll deepen your understanding of how to work smarter with your data. You’ll start by learning advanced transformation techniques, including how to use conditional logic to guide data based on specific rules. You’ll also explore dynamic content handling and create flexible workflows using user-defined parameters.

One major focus is performance: how to build faster, cleaner workspaces that don’t slow down or get stuck. You’ll learn how to spot and fix bottlenecks, structure your workspace efficiently, and apply best practices that keep your processes running smoothly.

You’ll also learn how to build custom transformers—your own reusable tools made by combining common steps into one. This makes your workspaces easier to manage and saves time on future projects.

Throughout the course, you’ll work with real-world scenarios so that by the end, you’ll not only understand the techniques—you’ll know how to apply them in your own projects.

    Course structure

The course begins with a quick refresher on key FME concepts to get everyone up to speed. From there, you’ll move into advanced transformation techniques like attribute manipulation, using FME functions, and managing null values effectively. You’ll learn how to apply conditional logic, work with related object properties, and keep your data clean and accurate.

Next, we focus on workspace performance—how to speed things up, reduce complexity, and make your transformations run more smoothly. You’ll explore how to use fanouts and dynamic translations to handle large and complex datasets more efficiently.

In the second half of the day, we dive into custom transformers. You’ll build your own, learn how to reuse them, and set up user parameters that give others control over how a workspace runs. These techniques help you create more flexible, reusable, and user-friendly solutions. All of this is reinforced through hands-on exercises using real-life examples.
