LiDAR

LiDAR — short for Light Detection and Ranging — is a remote sensing technology that uses rapid pulses of laser light to measure the distance between a sensor and the Earth’s surface. Each pulse reflects back to the sensor, and the time it takes to return is used to calculate distance with remarkable accuracy. When combined, millions of these measurements form a “point cloud”: a high-resolution, 3D representation of terrain, structures, and vegetation.

What makes LiDAR so valuable is its combination of speed, precision, and flexibility. It can cover large areas quickly — even dense forests or remote terrain — and captures both vertical and horizontal features with exceptional detail. Unlike traditional survey methods, LiDAR collects data from above, often using drones, aircraft, or vehicle-mounted systems, allowing for faster, safer, and more efficient data collection.

This technology has become a cornerstone in geospatial work. Surveyors use it to generate detailed topographic maps. Urban planners model infrastructure in 3D and assess the impact of new developments. Foresters monitor canopy height and ecosystem health, while hydrologists use LiDAR to map watersheds and model flood zones. Archaeologists uncover hidden landscapes by digitally removing vegetation layers, and engineers use it to assess and plan construction sites with greater accuracy.

LiDAR also plays a critical role in disaster management. Whether predicting landslides, modeling flood risks, or coordinating emergency response, the ability to map the ground quickly and precisely can make a measurable difference. In agriculture, it supports terrain-informed irrigation and planting. In transportation, it powers autonomous systems that rely on real-time environmental data.

Across all these fields, LiDAR delivers reliable, scalable insights — giving professionals a clearer understanding of the world, both above and below the surface.

In this ArcGIS LiDAR course, you’ll learn to process, analyze, and visualize LiDAR data using ArcGIS Pro — giving you the tools to support smarter planning, mapping, and environmental management.

    Course structure

    Day 1

You’ll begin by exploring the fundamentals of LiDAR — what it is, how it’s collected, and where to find existing datasets. Then, you’ll get hands-on with ArcGIS Pro to process point cloud data, convert it to raster format, and begin creating visualizations like hillshades and slope maps.

    Day 2

On the second day, you’ll take your analysis further. You’ll build local relief models, work in 3D environments, and combine LiDAR with vector layers like shapefiles to create rich spatial outputs. Time permitting, you’ll also explore advanced topics such as light intensity values and classification techniques for added precision.
