GIS and 3D Visualization

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) help us make sense of the world by visualizing and analyzing spatial data. Traditionally, this has been done using 2D maps. But the world isn’t flat—so why should our maps be? That’s where 3D GIS comes in.

3D GIS lets you explore and represent the world in three dimensions, offering a more realistic and detailed view of geographic data. Whether you’re planning new buildings, assessing environmental risks, or designing infrastructure, 3D visualization gives you the extra depth needed to make smarter, more informed decisions. You can see how buildings will affect sunlight in a neighborhood, how terrain impacts transportation, or how floodwaters might spread during a storm.

ArcGIS Pro, developed by Esri, is a leading platform that brings 3D GIS tools into everyday workflows. With features like 3D scenes, elevation surfaces, and advanced symbology, ArcGIS Pro allows you to visualize spatial information in ways that go far beyond the limits of flat maps.

At Geo-ICT, we’ve created this course specifically for GIS users who already know their way around 2D maps in ArcGIS Pro and are ready to step into the world of 3D. If you haven’t worked in ArcGIS Pro before, we recommend starting with our ArcGIS Pro Basics (2D) course, which lays the foundation you’ll need to succeed in this advanced training. Whether you work in urban planning, environmental analysis, or infrastructure design, 3D GIS is the skill that will set you apart.

What will you learn

This course gives you the essential skills to work with 3D data and build powerful 3D visualizations using ArcGIS Pro. You’ll start by learning how to find, import, and manage different types of 3D data, including elevation models, raster surfaces, and 3D features like buildings or terrain. You’ll learn how to set up and navigate 3D scenes, and how to turn standard 2D maps into fully interactive 3D environments.

As you progress, you’ll explore how to add layers, apply realistic symbology, and use lighting, camera angles, and elevation settings to create effective and meaningful visuals. You’ll also learn how to convert 2D shapes into 3D objects using extrusion, and how to add elevation surfaces for extra realism.

More importantly, you’ll see how 3D GIS supports real-world analysis. You’ll use tools in ArcGIS Pro to perform basic spatial analysis in 3D—like calculating visibility, running shadow studies, and assessing volumes or elevations. Throughout the course, you’ll complete hands-on exercises that reinforce what you learn, so you’ll walk away not just with knowledge—but with confidence.

    Course structure

    Day 1

On day one, you’ll get familiar with the ArcGIS Pro 3D environment. You’ll learn how to set up your first 3D scene, import various types of 3D data, and add raster layers. You’ll explore the basics of navigating and building a 3D view and begin converting 2D content into 3D.

    Day 2

On day two, the focus shifts to visualizing, modifying, and presenting your 3D scenes. You’ll learn how to create a 3D map from a standard 2D view and enhance it with elevation surfaces. You’ll also discover how to apply 3D symbology using extrusion and prepare your scene for sharing—either as a presentation or as an interactive online product.
