Introduction to 3D Scanning

Geo-ICT Training Center, The Netherlands - 3D scanning masterclass

3D scanning is changing the way we capture and understand the physical world. By using laser scanning technology, we can create detailed digital replicas of objects, spaces, and terrains. These models are used across industries—from construction and architecture to cultural heritage and industrial design—offering new ways to plan, design, and preserve.

In geo-information, 3D scanning plays a key role. It allows us to capture accurate, high-resolution spatial data, which can then be analyzed and modeled in GIS or CAD environments. This data can support everything from urban development and infrastructure planning to environmental monitoring and historical reconstruction.

At Geo-ICT, we’ve developed this course to introduce you to the full 3D scanning process. You’ll learn not only the theory behind how scanning works, but also how to use professional tools and software to scan, process, and model data. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to sharpen your skills, this course will equip you with practical techniques you can use right away.

What will you learn

This course gives you a step-by-step understanding of how to use 3D scanning to capture and model real-world objects and spaces. You’ll start with the basics of laser scanning—how scanners work, how to plan and perform a scan, and how to make sure your data is clean and accurate.

Next, you’ll dive into processing: transforming raw scan data into point clouds, and turning those point clouds into complete 3D models using tools like AutoCAD, Revit, and Recap. You’ll also learn about working with GIS platforms and how to choose the right software for different types of projects.

Throughout the course, you’ll practice working with actual scan data—first in the classroom, then out in the field. You’ll learn how to align multiple scans, handle large datasets, and produce 3D models that are both accurate and ready for use in real-world applications.

Why choose this course

At Geo-ICT, we believe learning should be hands-on, practical, and immediately useful. That’s exactly what you’ll get with our 3D scanning course. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to sharpen your skills, this course gives you the tools and confidence to turn scanned data into precise 3D models—ready for use in real projects.

    Course structure

    Day 1

We start with a short introduction session where participants share their experience with 3D scanning. Then we cover the core principles of laser scanning—how the equipment works, how to prepare for a scan, and how to ensure accuracy. You’ll complete a hands-on exercise by scanning an object and converting the data into a basic point cloud, giving you immediate practical experience.

    Day 2

On the second day, the instructor demonstrates a full scanning process, from setup to post-processing. After that, you’ll conduct your own field scans under guidance, capturing real-world objects. In the afternoon, you’ll work with AutoCAD, Revit, and Recap to clean and prepare your point clouds for modeling.

    Day 3

The final day focuses on converting point clouds into complete 3D models. You’ll explore tools in CAD and GIS platforms that help refine and structure your data. The instructor will explain key extensions and how to choose the right tool for different tasks. You’ll then create your own 3D model based on data you collected earlier—bringing together everything you’ve learned.
