QGIS Basics

Total study time: 24 hours

Want to take control of your geographic data using QGIS? In this one-on-one course, you’ll learn how to create maps, perform spatial analysis, and manage geospatial data using QGIS. With personal guidance and hands-on assignments, you’ll apply your skills to real-world datasets and build the confidence to visualize and work with geodata effectively.

What is QGIS?

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) help us understand our world by turning spatial data into visual insights. GIS combines mapping, analysis, and databases to organize and display information on digital maps. This allows you to spot patterns, uncover relationships, and make smarter decisions.

GIS is used in many fields. Urban planners use it to design roadways and neighborhoods. Environmental scientists track changes in ecosystems. Emergency responders rely on GIS for route optimization, while businesses use it to decide where to open new locations. By combining multiple data sources, GIS simplifies complex questions and supports strategic thinking.

QGIS is a powerful, open-source GIS tool known for being both user-friendly and feature-rich. It’s widely used by governments, researchers, and professionals around the world as a free alternative to commercial platforms. You can use QGIS to manage, analyze, and visualize all kinds of spatial data.

What sets QGIS apart is its flexibility. It supports many file formats and databases—including PostgreSQL/PostGIS—and comes with tools for mapping, analysis, and reporting. You can create topographic maps, analyze satellite imagery, or overlay statistical data for deeper insight.

Plus, QGIS is backed by an active global community, meaning it’s constantly updated to meet modern GIS needs. Whether you’re new to GIS or expanding your skills, QGIS gives you the tools to work with geodata at a professional level.

What will you learn in this blended learning course?

This course introduces you to the core features of QGIS. You’ll learn how to import, edit, and visualize geographic data in various formats. You’ll work with both raster and vector data and create contour lines, relief maps, and even 3D models.

You’ll also learn how to connect and integrate multiple data sources in QGIS—like WMS, WFS, WCS, GPX, and SpatiaLite. Along the way, you’ll apply techniques like georeferencing, map styling, and spatial analysis to turn raw data into meaningful insights.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to use QGIS independently, applying your skills to real-world projects across planning, environment, or infrastructure.

Why choose this QGIS Basics course?

Blended learning gives you the best of both worlds—live interaction and flexible self-paced study—so you can build real, job-ready GIS skills. In this course, you’ll work with real data and learn how to manage, visualize, and analyze geospatial information using one of the most accessible GIS tools available.

We kick off with a live session where you’ll jump straight into QGIS. With support from expert trainers, you’ll georeference data, combine map layers, and identify spatial patterns that support real decision-making.

Next, our self-paced modules help you deepen your skills at your own pace. You’ll explore how to import and edit data in formats like Shapefiles, KML, and GeoTIFF. You’ll build maps, perform analyses, and work confidently with raster and vector data.

Later, in a second live session, you’ll apply what you’ve learned to a practical project. You’ll solve challenges, fine-tune your workflow, and get feedback to improve your results.

One of the highlights of this course is its real-world focus. You’ll create professional outputs—like styled maps and layered datasets—that can be used immediately in your work.

By combining expert instruction with hands-on learning, this course helps you go beyond the basics. By the end, you’ll be able to turn geospatial data into clear, actionable insights—ready to support smarter decisions in your field.
