QGIS Advanced

Total study time: 24 hours

Want to get more out of your spatial data with QGIS? In this one-on-one course, you’ll learn how to use advanced GIS tools for complex analysis and professional map production. You’ll discover how to connect GIS databases, analyze vector and raster data, and use expressions to streamline your workflows. With expert guidance and hands-on assignments, you’ll apply QGIS confidently in real-world projects.

Introduction to QGIS and GIS

QGIS is a free, open-source Geographic Information System (GIS) that helps you create maps, collect and analyze spatial data, and visualize results. GIS gives us a clearer view of the world by turning complex geodata into easy-to-understand maps. It combines mapping, stats, and databases to show patterns, trends, and relationships—so you can make smarter decisions.

GIS is used in nearly every sector. Urban planners use it to design roads and neighborhoods. Environmental researchers track changes in nature reserves. Emergency services use it to find the fastest routes in a crisis. And businesses rely on GIS to pick store locations or study customer data. By linking information from multiple sources, GIS helps solve real problems and supports better planning.

With QGIS, you can work with both raster and vector data. You’ll use tools like georeferencing, data linking, and styling to build detailed maps and run spatial analyses. QGIS supports common GIS formats—like Shapefiles (SHP), KML, and GeoTIFF—and connects to databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, PostGIS, and Oracle Spatial.

It also supports multiple coordinate systems, including the Dutch RD system and Belgian Lambert projection. With its flexibility and powerful features, QGIS is a great tool for anyone working with geodata.

What will you learn in the QGIS Advanced blended learning course?

This course takes your QGIS skills to the next level. You’ll dive into advanced tools and learn how to run detailed spatial analyses, manage data efficiently, and create high-quality maps. It’s ideal if you already know the basics and want to go further.

We start with a quick review of data types and formats—like geopackages and PostgreSQL/PostGIS. You’ll learn how to set up your project environment with home folders, metadata, and styling defaults. Then you’ll work with expressions for tasks like field calculations, rule-based labels, and dynamic map layouts.

You’ll also explore templates to save time—both for printing and project setup. The course covers a range of analysis tools, including vector analysis, graphical models, and raster analysis.

Next, you’ll develop advanced editing skills. You’ll practice snapping, avoid overlaps, trace existing features, and use forms and geometry checks to keep your data clean and accurate.

Finally, you’ll learn how to design and export polished, professional maps. You’ll work with map themes, atlases, and overview maps to clearly communicate your insights to others.

Note: If you’re new to QGIS, we recommend starting with the QGIS Basics course to build a solid foundation first.

Why choose this one-on-one QGIS Advanced course?

Blended learning gives you the best of both worlds—live interaction and flexible, self-paced study. You’ll build real, job-ready GIS skills through expert instruction and hands-on practice.

We begin with a live session where you dive right into QGIS. You’ll explore advanced tools with help from GIS experts—working on real datasets as you analyze, edit, and visualize spatial data.

Next, our self-paced modules let you deepen your skills at your own pace. You’ll learn how to connect databases, automate tasks with expressions, and build efficient workflows. You’ll also sharpen your ability to manage complex spatial data with precision.

Then, during a second live session, you’ll apply everything you’ve learned to a real-world scenario. You’ll refine your methods, solve design challenges, and get personal feedback to improve your results.

A standout part of the course is its real-world focus. You’ll produce professional maps, run advanced analyses, and create outputs you can use right away in your work.

By the end, you won’t just know how to use QGIS—you’ll know how to use it effectively in your own GIS projects.
